I would like to tour Ponaganset High School before deciding whether to apply. Is there a way for me to schedule a tour? Yes, we encourage prospective students to attend our annual Fall Open House. In addition, students may sign up for one of our periodic tours throughout the year. My family lives outside of the Foster-Glocester School District. What are the tuition costs associated with attending Ponaganset High School?
For Rhode Island students, tuition costs are covered by the school district where you live. Students from outside of Rhode Island are not eligible to have the tuition paid by the district where they live. The tuition cost is the per-pupil expenditure.
What college and career programs are offered at Ponaganset High School?
Currently there are 15 CTE Programs offered at Ponaganset: 1) Animal Sciences, 2) Biomedical Science, 3) Business,4) Computer Science, 5) Computer Engineering 6) Construction Management, 7) Criminal Justice, 8) Education, 9)Firefighting,10)Health and Fitness/EMT, 11) Music and Performing Arts, 12) Audio Production/Music Technology, 13) Farms and Food, 14) Pre-Engineering, and 15) Visual Arts.
Once I choose to enroll in a specific program, am I required to remain in that program for the duration of my time at Ponaganset?
CTE Programs are designed for a minimum of three years (preferably four years) of instruction and hands-on learning so students have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to seek college credit and/or industry certifications.Some program requirements may require four years of enrollment to obtain required certifications. All programs require students to complete 80 work based learning hours that must be completed during their four years.
Is transportation provided to out-of-district students?
Transportation is provided for all in-district students, as well as for out-of-district students residing in Scituate, Coventry, Warwick, West Warwick, and East Greenwich. Accepted students residing in other towns may utilize one of our many bus depot stops in Burrillville, Cranston, Johnston, and Smithfield areas. What does the application process and timeline look like?
Students who reside outside of the Foster-Glocester School District must submit an application to attend PHS. Applications are available on our website at: CTE Application Priority is given to in-district students for enrollment in our CTE Programs. Once the Master Schedule is developed, any remaining available seats will be filled by qualified applicants using a lottery system in accordance with the RI Regulations on Career and Technical Education. A waiting list will be established where space is not available.
Early Acceptance applications are due by November 30th. Qualified Early Acceptance Enrollment students who apply by November 30th are notified of preliminary acceptance by December 30th.
Open Enrollment applications are accepted from December through June (depending upon enrollment). Qualified Open Enrollment applicants will be notified of preliminary acceptance within 2 weeks after we receive a complete application packet. Acceptance will be on a first-come, first-served basis when space is available.
Late Enrollment Depending upon program availability, applications are accepted from July through the start of the school year. Qualified Late Enrollment applicants will be notified of preliminary acceptance on an ongoing basis (approximately every 2-3 weeks) after receiving a complete application packet.
What types of athletics, extracurricular, and co-curricular opportunities exist at Ponaganset High School? Ponaganset offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities that allow students to explore their interests. Students are also active in co-curricular activities to supplement their coursework. I live outside of the Foster-Glocester School District. Must I notify the school district in the community where I live that I may attend Ponaganset High School?
You do need to notify the district of residence if you decide to submit a formal application to attend our school district. This is necessary because the district where you live will be covering the costs of tuition if you are eligible to attend and they need to properly budget the cost. Upon acceptance, you will need to notify your district and register within your district to confirm residence status.
You do not need to notify the school district where you live to obtain information about our CTE Programs, attend an open house, take a tour of our campus or explore the possibility of attending our school district.
When is drop-off and pick-up?
Students can be dropped off any time after 7:30 a.m. The first class begins at 7:48 a.m. Dismissal is at 2:15 p.m. For more information on drop-off and pick-up, please see the student handbook.
How would you describe the culture at Ponaganset?
Our Ponaganset Pride is evident from the moment you step on campus. From students sporting their Ponaganset green, to an overwhelming dedication to and involvement in the school community, Ponaganset features a comfortable learning environment that enables students to explore and cultivate their passions. Students have the opportunity to enroll in any of our 20 AP courses, 17 College Level courses, and 40 Honors courses. In addition, students can earn a multitude of certifications depending upon their program. As a result, students are better prepared to succeed at fulfilling their future endeavors.
What is a typical class size for grades 9-12? What is the student-to-faculty ratio?
The overall student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1. The typical class size, depending on program of study and student interest, ranges from 16 - 25 students per class.
I am attending private school and/or I am being home schooled. Do I need to notify the school district in the community where I live that I will attend Ponaganset High School?
In order for you to be accepted into one of our CTE programs you will need to contact the district where you live, prove residency, and enroll in the district. They will then enter you in their student information system as an out-of-district placement. This is necessary because they will be covering the costs of tuition and need to record you as a student in their district in order to receive funds from the State of RI.
You do not need to notify the school district where you reside to obtain information about our CTE programs, attend an open house, take a tour of our campus or explore the possibility of attending our school district.
